On Being a Foodie
I signed off my last post on my way to dinner - grilled shark steaks. We've been trying to eat more fish since they are high in Omega-3s and lower in fat than red meat, so when we saw black-tip shark steaks on sale we got two thinking this would be a wonderful way to continue our adventure into the brine. This, however, was a huge mistake. Even though we marinated them for 45 minutes and grilled them over appropriate heat for the designated amoumt of time, they turned out rubberier than chewed-up tires under the monkey bars. Actually I think some forms of rubber would have been tastier than these steaks. Needless to say after about two bites we threw them out and made grilled cheese sandwichs.
Well, we were a bit dicouraged by this attempt and staved off the seafood for a while. In the meantime we bought a marinated tenderloin - yes the entire tenderloin, which, for those of you who don't know, is quite a chuck-o-pork. Gene brought home some fresh asparagus, and we cut the tenderloin in half and then in small, cicular cutlets, which, yes, we again grilled along with the asparagus. On a whim I decided to make a hollandaise sauce. Now don't get all "oh" and "ah" here - it's uber simple - like butter, eggs, and lemon juice simple. How that sounds retched, but it tastes really good! When I plated up the tenderloin cutlets and asparagus with the hollandaise, Gene said, "Wow, this looks like a restaurant meal." Um, yup.
So tonight we have grilled salmon in order to meet our at least once a week fish quotient. It was good - we should have had rice though, damn empty cabinets!
So,yeah, that was my venture into the world of the foodies for the week. Now it's peanut butter and nutella since we're running out of food and can't go shopping until Friday. sigh.
